Holiday Gites in Normandy

Les Hirondelles  -  Local information, shops, restaurants, markets

Shops

Cuves itself has a Boulangerie,/Bar/Post Office.  The market town of Brecey, a five minute drive away, has a selection of small shops, two supermarkets, bars and a Pizza takeaway!  The market is held on Friday morning and, although small, is worth a visit just for the people-watching.  It is the weekly meeting place for the locals.  The fish stalls are particularly good and there is always a good variety of fresh fruit, vegetables and local cheeses.

A little further afield (approximately 20 minutes), the town of Avranches has lots of shops and bars in the centre and also out-of-town retail parks for the bigger stores.  It also boasts two hypermarkets – Carrefour and Leclerc.  Market day is Saturday.

Most shops in the area are open from around 9.00 am to 7.00 pm, with a long lunch hour between 12.00 and 2.00pm.  This can vary by half an hour or so.  Generally, shops are closed on Mondays but some, particularly boulangeries, open on Sunday mornings.

Eating Out

There are a myriad of bars in the area where you can obtain a good lunch, although fewer open for food in the evenings.

Our favourite, and most local, restaurant is Le Moulin de Jean www.lemoulindejean.com  situated a five minute drive away on the route to St Pois.  It is very well-known in the locality and has an excellent reputation.  Expect to pay around 30 euros for three courses.

For more casual dining, The Buffalo Grill at La Gare, Avranches has a good steak menu, as does La Boucherie on the Parc de la Baie.

Le P’tit Nicholas is a Pizzeria in Brecey and also serves Steak.

Eating In

A Table d'Hote dinner is available twice a week, by arrangement.  Please ask for latest prices but around 15 euros per head.

Entertainment

There is live music at nearby Bellefontaine Park, a family  holiday complex, every Friday evening during July and August.
